Zimbabwe School Examinations Council
Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) is the national examination board in Zimbabwe responsible for administering public examinations at primary and secondary school levels. It was established in 1996 as a replacement for the Cambridge Examinations Syndicate, which had previously administered examinations in Zimbabwe.
ZIMSEC is mandated to conduct examinations, process and release results, and issue certificates to successful candidates. The council’s main objective is to ensure the provision of valid and reliable assessment instruments that measure the knowledge, skills, and competencies of learners in line with the national curriculum.

The ZGCE Ordinary Level examination is usually taken after four years of secondary education and serves as a benchmark for entry into tertiary institutions or employment opportunities. On the other hand, the ZGCE Advanced Level examination is typically taken after two years of advanced level studies and is a requirement for admission into universities or colleges.
Apart from the ZGCE examinations, ZIMSEC also administers other assessments such as the Grade Seven National Assessment Examination (commonly known as “O-Level”), which is taken by primary school students at the end of their seventh year. This examination serves as a transition point from primary to secondary education.
